Tha Dogg Pound – Dogg Chit (3-27-2007)

Only a handful of rappers from the 90’s fortunate to still be around today can validly claim to be part of rap evolution the way that Daz and Kurupt can. Guesting on classic albums like Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, Snoop Dogg’s Doggystlye, to eventually releasing there own classic in its own right Dogg Food in ’95 the duo definitely has the clout to be considered true OGs in this game. Last years Cali Iz Active served as a statement that the two were down no matter what, now they return less than a year later with an entirely west coast flavored offering Dogg Chit. Keep in mind that Daz aka Dat Nigga Daz, aka Daz Dillinger is indeed responsible for some of the best production behind Pac’s All Eyez On Me as he produces on all of this album’s fourteen tracks.

Daz and Kurupt cover everything from scrappin to cappin on the album’s opening tracks “Get Out My Way” and “I’ll Bury Ya”. Simple gang related and violence insinuating lyrics from the two might take you back to the days of ill advised gat totin paradise, for others it’ll be a quick dead end! Soopafly and Daz combine behind the boards to make “Everybody” a more upbeat sinister gangsta celebration. The Game shows up with an off kilter deliverance over the mid 80’s sounding “Anybody Killa”. Daz and Kurupt go hard on a hoe again on the breezy Snoop Dogg assisted “Vibe”.

Bad Azz’s first cameo in what feels like a decade is certainly not wasted on the nostalgically pleasing “Where U From”. The DPG fails at some of its lighter hearted attempts like the Too Short featured “Can’t Get Enough” and the no BM drama wanna be anthem “Dat Aint My Baby”. On “Throw Ya Hood Up” Daz and Kurupt create a bouncing feel good gangsta celebration once again for another one of the album’s high points. The album seems to get better as time goes by as evidenced by the arguable climax towards the end of the disc. “It’z A Good Azz Day” is an exclamation point as the DPGz have a classic west coast bar-b-q over Daz and Ivan Johnson’s feel good sound bed.

Year after year whether it be solo efforts or group outings Daz and Kurupt find a way to satisfy there core audience. 2007 thus far in its young inception is proving to be no acception. With a penchant for personifying there own unaltered sound the DPGz are evidently out for a west coast penant run in the early innings. For some of the harder critics like thyself Dogg Chit is just a glimpse of what the DPGz once were before they ate the big bag of Dogg Food!
