Dukedagod Presents – Dipset – More Than Music Vol. 2 (5-8-2007)

New York, the original birthplace of our culture has seen more than its fair share of crews over the past three decades. As a matter of fact the New York rap scene has basically been the face of what we know as east coast. With a presence so ginormous it’s no wonder why clicks such as the Wu Tang Clan, or the Bad Boy camp from yesteryear have been able to cater to enthusiasts so effectively. Power comes in numbers and that’s why the never ending enrollment at the Diplomats camp has turned out to be a strategically lucrative endeavor for nearly a decade now. Amidst speculation of a possible rift between the founding fathers Cam’Ron Giles and Jim Jones the crew hasn’t not shied away from the spotlight in these uncertain times. In house A&R Dukedagod uses the early spring season to release his second installment of More Than Music. With enough beef floating around the streets of Harlem to put Mickey D’s out of business the Byrdgang is once again ready to prove that there is definitely more than just music, it’s an all out riot! The latest Dipset up and comer 40 Cal opens up the latest crew effort by shouting out a few of his Byrdgang affiliates on the all too teasing intro. As a veteran Juelz Santana spits a flashy eight bars on “Gladiators” while Hell Rell, 40 Cal, JR Writer, and newcomer Bezel all spit heat hotter than the Dipset underboss. Producer Swift D with some assistance from Dukedagod provides a playful Harlem night backdrop for the collection’s first single “More Than Music”.
Max B’s off beat singing on the otherwise menacing “Anniversary” is an unnecessary addition to the Mel Matrix and Jim Jones assisted title. Producers Heck and Will lace a vintage Dipset sounding backdrop on “The Corner” as Hell Rell, 40 Cal, and JR Writer combine to send real hustlers all across the streets a true testament of hope in struggling to bubbling. Comedian Katt Williams’ first national exposure as a rapper comes off way less entertaining than his latest stand up joint as young JR Writer is able to set a better tone on the Knoxville produced “Get That Money”. Hell Rell turns in the best of his eight appearances on the JR Writer and A-Mafia assisted “It’s Over pt. II”. After receiving only co-production credits on the album’s other joints Dukedagod goes for self on the Freaky Zeekey and Hell Rell repped “Feelin Myself”. The two rostermates released from jail almost exactly a year apart show up and show good chemistry in talking cash shit over the top down smooth groover.
As with last years first More Than Music installment the focus is placed on breaking the careers of a few designated affiliates. Last year it was mainly JR Writer and Hell Rell, this time around it’s Hell Rell, Freaky Zeekey, and 40 Cal. With Rell gearing up to release his first album For The Hell Of It this is nothing more than a blatant set up for the grimy MC. The bigger names in the crew (Jim Jones, Cam’Ron, Juelz Santana) don’t really show up with anything impressive leaving the soldiers with more weight on there shoulders. Anyhow More Than Music vol. 2 should satisfy loyal fans of the Dip even though the collection lacks the punch of its predecessor!
