HAWK – Endangered Species (5-15-2007)
Posted on May 15 in Reviewsby adminPrint
Almost exactly one year ago Big Hawk was fatally shot, an incident all to reminiscent of the way his older brother Fat Pat exited this life nearly a decade earlier. Losses of this caliber can never be over came or overlooked. Thanks to the support of Hawk’s family, friends, and collegues the late great H-Town MC’s legacy will be preserved through his latest album Endangered Species. Although H-A-double K may not be one of the first names you think about H-Town he is undoubtedly one of the founding father’s of the screwed movement. Those lucky enough to have realized Hawk’s signifigance while he was here will never forget his most famous line “I’m chillin wit my broad and you already know…” “and if you wanna reach me hit me on the down low!” RIP Big Hawk
Hawk gets help from Paul Wall and Slim Thug on the album’s opening track “Lets Get It On”. In an attempt to recreate the majesty from Lil O’s “Playas Get Chose” Hawk gets help from Scooby, Lil O, and Mike D on the sticky “I Like That Girl”. Producers Shorty P and Chaney Welsh combine there sounds on the rock teased lead single “Throwed In The Game” which turns out to be a veteran affair with much appreciated help from Lil Keke, Big Pokey, and C Note. Producer Derek “Grizz” Edwards laces enough hard bass for ten blocks on the commanding C. Ward assisted “Aint Having It” then doubles back alongside Chaney Welsh to do a marvelous job of recreating Eugene White Philly World’s “Gotta Get You Home Tonight” for theTrae, Chamillionaire, and Devin The Dude assisted lovers affair “Coming Home”.
In an all too sad turn of events Hawk turns out to be a prime example of the legitimacy behind his album’s title in regards to young black males in this country. Violence has always been an intrical part of man’s nature and will continue to be. Individuals like Big Hawk will retain a legendary status within us still in here in the physical form thanks to the ill fated manner of an individual. Maybe Hawk’s career had already reached its pinnacle, maybe it was just at a start, either way he leaves behind a legacy in a city that has its own hall of fame graveyard. Endangered Species may not be the album of the year or even the month but one thing remains for certain and that’s the fact that H-A-dubb-K will live on through it and eternity! RIP Big Hawk, Fat Pat, DJ Screw!
