DJ Khaled – We The Best (6-12-2007)

If 2005 was the year of H-Town then nobody can go against the movement that Dade County has spurred up in just the last year. On the strength of DJ Khaled producers like The Runners and Cool & Dre, plus MCs like Rick Ross and Trick Daddy, and Pitbull the MIA set the stage for one of the biggest saturation efforts in the history of the rap game. The flame was so hot that its accompanying hype helped propel D. Wade and the Heat to the franchises first NBA title. Now almost exactly a year later the dust has settled, the balloons are deflated, and the Heat got ousted in the first round of the playoffs. What a peculiar turn of events, the one remaining thing that isn’t peculiar is DJ Khaled’s extreme work ethic, and to prove it he’s already back with the follow up to his largely accepted Listennn!!! compilation with We The Best. Things seem to be shaping up as the production is tighter this time around mainly thanks to the aforementioned production duos plus some work from Khaled’s alter ego Beat Novacane.

Rick Ross kicks things off with a profound purpose over Beat Novacane’s (DJ Khaled) rumbling basslines on “Intro (We The Best)”. The compilation’s first single “We Takin Over” is a facelift of last year’s Listennn!!! first single “Holla At Me”, the two tracks have the same sunny feel and almost feature identical lineups. Khaled must have gone over the budget for the Young Jeezy, Juelz Santana, Rick Ross, Fat Joe, Lil Wayne, and Dre featured “Brown Paper Bag”. T-Pain, Trick Daddy, Rick Ross, and Plies rep for the inner cities over the Runners very satisfactory helmed “I’m So Hood”. For the first time on the album production takes a backseat on the Beanie Siegal and Pooh Bear repped “Before The Solution”. Beans spits with his usual ferocity but Beat Novacane’s lackluster board work is the death of a potential favorite.

The Cool & Dre produced “I’m From The Ghetto” is a more than sincere effort but the awkwardness of the too feel good production makes the track come off generic. Caine Beats laces Lil Wayne and Birdman with a powerful statement as the two trade verses in between a screwed line from Wayne off Birdman’s 2005 disc Fast Money on “S On My Chest”. The 305 is in full effect as Trick Daddy, Rick Ross, Trina, Dre, Flo’Rida, Brisco, and C-Ride all rep for the Orange Bowl on the Diaz Brothers helmed “Bitch I’m From Dade County”. Bone Thugs N Harmony make a surprising transition within the pulsating drums of Cool & Dre on “The Originators”. Jadakiss, Ja Rule, and Fat Joe come together again for the second serving of “New York” enlisting Cool & Dre lay the foundation once again. The original track has the upper hand due to its then originality, but don’t be fooled into thinking that the ’07 version doesn’t hold its weight.

Conceptually DJ Khaled doesn’t do anything special with his sophomore effort, but smaller and more potent doses of bass pay off in large dividends in the end. Aside from hearing an overabundance of Rick Ross, Dre, and Lil Wayne Khaled’s decision to go with a tight knit group of proven MCs is another good call as it allows for the compilation to be delivered in an evenly flowing manner. With 90% of the compilation’s production coming courtesy of either The Runners, Cool & Dre, or Beat Novacane it’s no wonder why the short offering plays so well. The three production franchises compliment each other’s style while all seemingly going after the same goal of deep mind bending bass. Minus the couple of lapses this time around We The Best proves that the MIA is still a contender even without the chances of an NBA title this year!

VERDICT – 13 / 20
