Messy Marv & Mitchy Slick – Messy Slick (6-26-2007)
Posted on Jun 26 in Reviewsby adminPrint

We are just a little over half way through this year and Messy Marv has already blessed us with four collaborative projects, with Messy Slick being the latest on the list. Mitchy Slick by way of San Diego is the latest west coast MC to get put on blast by the left sides newest ambassador. After there appearance alongside each other on Mess’ compilation effort Muzik Fo Tha Taliban the duo is posed to raise a few eyebrows with some west coast funk more reminiscent of those dominant days in the 90’s.
On the album’s opening cut “Click Clack” Mess does the best job of reinforcing his hood presence. Producer Traxamillion lays down enough bass on “2 Bombs” to keep mail boxes shaking open from California to Kentucky. Mess and Slick recycle “2nd Letter” from Muzik Fo Tha Taliban for there collaboration effort and add a couple of extra verses and ad-libs. Damu and T-Nutty show up on the album’s closing effort “Siccness Anthem” where producers Tha Bizness add a tasteful sample of Eazy E’s “Boyz In Tha Hood”. Throughout the collection Mess and Slick enlist the help of several collaborators like Yukmouth on “On The One”, Styles P along with Turf Talk on “Rollie On My Arm”, and Keak Da Sneak on “Cherish A Thug”. Producer Dubb Knoxx keeps the laid back playa certified joints coming from left and right as reaffirmed by his credit on the Krondon assisted “Hey”. The album’s only unbearable joint comes when Mitchy Slick unsuccessfully attempts to harmonize on “Tryin To Get A Dolla”.
It seems like every project that Messy Marv puts his hands gets marginally better than the last. Messy Slick is no exception as he and Mitchy Slick commit to spitting real west coast shit over some simple but very penetrating production. Of course lyrical complexity is the only thing missing on this release but that’s made up for with sheer delivery of a specified lifestyle. Turns out that the hyphy movement isn’t the only thing moving at high speed on the left coast after all!
