Kentucky Colonel

A few weeks ago my good friend and business associate Sean Stafford asked me if I wanted a Kentucky flag. Of course with most things political things getting our flags proved to be a little more tedious than we anticipated with certain political offices giving us the run around while other just gave us a [...]

Master P set both of his younger siblings up for much more success than either of them probably bargained for. From the amount of anticipation that Silkk The Shocker’s sophomore album received it may very well be assumed that he got the better end of the deal. Of course we all remember Silkk as the tall slender raspy all out of whack rapper from back in the day but Charge It 2 Da Game may be one of No Limit’s most sought after non Master P solo albums sought after albums of the golden year. I remember we would all be on the back of the school bus bumping this album stopping every few minutes or so to ask which track are you bangin’? Not to mention the all white Q-Pack CD cases definitely set things off on a whole different level not yet displayed in rap music up until that point.

Beats By The Pound heavy hitter KLC manned the boards behind one of the most memorable “soldier songs” ever on “I’m A Soldier.” The fact that over ten different artists actually spat on the track is astonishing in itself. Whenever I listen to this album now I usually just skip ahead to the heavily mafia marinated “Give Me The World.” It wasn’t a personal favorite ten years ago, but there’s something about the whole “I want the whole world and everything in it” Scarface mentality that just makes so much sense to me in my adult years. Back in ’98 no one would’ve predicted the amount of success that Destiny’s Child would go on to garner over the next decade but the talent level was definitely displayed on the album’s first single “Just Be Straight With Me.”

Throughout the rest of Charge It 2 Da Game Silkk takes his non-lyrical abilities through an assortment of differing situations. On “If I Don’t Gotta” he and label mate Fiend sound close to suicide as they recount there harsh days in the hood. More of that same negative energy is present on the standout “Momma Always Told Me” which features a bevy of emotions courtesy of Master P, C-Murder, and Eightball. To our generation this album is definitely infamous for at least one if not both of these two tracks: “It Aint My Fault” and “Let Me Hit It.” Both cuts featured an always energetic Mystikal; the pairing of he and Silkk always seemed to garner optimal results. After 19 tracks of gangsta-thug-balla-hustla lyrics Silkk shuts things down with his heart warming dedication to his slain older brother Kevin Miller on “Me And You.”

Sure Charge It 2 Da Game wasn’t the best No Limit album of 1998 but Silkk has something to be proud of in the amount of anticipation he was able to build with this album. After this album dropped things seemed to be just a bit clearer as to what No Limit was about to do. Suddenly the massive amount of CDs coming soon list didn’t seem like it was going to be such an impossible feat to accomplish. Check out Charge It 2 Da Game’s two video features “Just Be Straight With Me” featuring Destiny’s Child and “It Aint My Fault” featuring Mystikal. Another One By Ambition-1
