A few weeks ago my good friend and business associate Sean Stafford asked me if I wanted a Kentucky flag. Of course with most things political things getting our flags proved to be a little more tedious than we anticipated with certain political offices giving us the run around while other just gave us a [...]

Devin The Dude – Smoke Sessions Vol. 1 (4-1-2008)

Throughout the last decade Devin The Dude has made a name for himself sort of like the perverted kid in middle school did back in the day. Known for spitting laid back lyrics about sexual escapades as well as long daily smoke sessions Devin has come to embody everything that’s wrong with hip hop in the right way. Earlier this year Devin made a surprise exit from his longtime label home Rap-A-Lot Records a situation which up to this point has shed no further details. His latest retail mixtape finds the Texan spitting about blunts and broads alongside some of his like fellows from the Odd Squad, the Coughee Brothaz and some new talent he has seemed to pick off the growing weed plant.

Since this is Devin’s first mixtape he shows absolutely no apology for showing his as on the extensive interlude “If I Did A Mixtape” where he basically makes every effort to fuck up some of your favorite R&B tracks from the early to mid 90’s. “Getting High” is about getting high and introduces the talents of some of his pot loving buddies. The Odd Squad as well as Jugg Mugg and Rob show up on the cloudy themed track. On “Searching” Devin finds himself spitting some random, off the wall, and sarcastic shit as he even has the audacity to become a public servant by instructing kids to say no to drugs, pills, and influence. Guess he wants to save some more for himself, again. Though there seems to be a different theme on “She Wants To Get Closer” the track inevitably comes off as a dignified smokers groove.

On “Mixtape 2″ Devin takes a little more time to fuck up some more classic R&B shit. Devin finds himself in his usual form as he spits another joint full of smoke and sexually seductive slang on the Baby Girl assisted “Take Me Home.” “Makin It Hard”, “Stangy”, and “Da Real Thang” all fall right in line with the aforementioned “Take Me Home.” “Todd’s Crazy Ass” turns out to be the funniest moment of the mixtape as Todd Fisher talks adamantly about his passion for jackin off. Devin and company talk about putting a smile on not them lips but those on “Not Them, Those.” Both “Freestyle” and “Aint Nothin Like Old School Bitch” sport some old school knock as Devin and company spit about their latest pussy-capades.

Smoke Sessions Volume 1 is a hazy fun filled adventure through Texas. Of course its not too serious at all, but it does posses at least some musical quality. It doesn’t seem like Devin spent too much time going over content, but then again that’s why we all love Devin The Dude anyways. With this latest release Devin should be able to keep the momentum he’s already built throughout his career with Rap-A-Lot rolling and even build on it to some degree.
