Magic – Skys The Limit (9-15-1998)

In March of 1998 inside the jacket to C-Murder’s Life Or Death joint there was an advertisement for Magic’s debut effort Skys The Limit. It crazy how you can have so much money and clout that you can just give your little brother his own label and his own artist. That’s just what Master P did with Magic. I guess he figured he was already raping enough niggas as it wasand Silkk was too young to try his hand at some business shit so give it to C. I must say he did a pretty good job with his one and only legit artist. Youknow, I just thought to myself I wonder if C-Murder and Silkk were signed to contracts or not. That’s worth researching.
“Ghetto Godzilla” was a pretty good way to start off Magic’s debut album but the Mystikal assisted “Did What I Had 2” was a better display of lyrical ability by both MCs. The C-Murder assisted “Depend On Me” was and I’m pretty sure always will be one of my favorite No Limit tracks ever. O’dell and KLC hook up behind the boards to lace C-Murder and Magic with the hood pain ridden “No Hope.” I always loved the part on “Take It To Da Streets” where thelittle Tony Montana dude was like “this is what you send at me? These are your fucking niggas lying on theground. I told you bitches don’t fuck with me. You fuckin cocka-roaches don’twant none. What – what the fuck are you looking at? You still want some? Send the rest of your goombas and take it to the streets.”
For the funniest and most fucked up reason “Ball Til I Fall” reminds me of some White Castle commercial, no joke! Snoop Dogg and Steady Mobb’N lend some pretty good west coast assistance on the hood sentimental “I Got Love 4 Ya.” When Soulja Slim said “I’d rather get caught with it than without, I aint lyin” on “Money Don’t Make Me” it sent a chill down my bones, I guess that shits realer than any of us still breathing will ever realize. I hate the rock song “No Limit” but I love the beginning where the lady asks “if people are hooked on pot can they be sick if they don’t get it?” Pure comedy!
Even in its prime simplicity I used to love the shit out ofthe Silkk The Shocker assisted “What I Gotta.” I love how Magic goes off on a hoe tangent on the Big Ed, Mac, Kane and Abel assisted “Gimpin” and then turns around and talks about how much he loves his fiancée on the closing “Chastity.” By the way, Big Ed ripped that “Gimpin” shit when he said “I’m that big dick nigga ridin up the street, I’m that big dick nigga that got em goin mouth to meat.”
The North Carolina blue case would have gone harder if it were the Q-Pack kind but the regular joint was substantial enough. The actual CD was pretty cool too. It’s weird how I liked so much of this shit ten years ago and my likings can change so much. Some of the shit I used to love back then I hate now and some of the shit I used to hate back then I love now. I guess I can describe my feelings for Magic’s Skys The Limit as a definite love hate relationship. I still like some of it but like I said already I really don’t like some of the tracks I used to like.
