Mean Green – Major Players Compilation (9-29-1998)

First of all the intro to this compilation is funny as shit. It kind of reminds me of how lame ass rappers think the game is supposed to go…of course that’s why they made it huh. In my own personal opinion I thought that Fiend and Mac were definitely two of the most lyrical dudes on the tank and the track that made me feel that way was the KLC produced “We.” What’s a No Limit compilation without the likes of the Underground Kings? Pimp C and Bun Blaid it down on the collection’s best track “Tossed Up.” The Ghetto Commission came through with some good stories on the sinister “Devil’s Playground” which was definitely one of the tracks I used to wear out.
Though I liked the message of “Major Players” I can’t say that this was one of the tracks I actually liked on this compilation. Luckily this CD came out back when Too Short’s lyrics still had some shock value. At this point we’ve heard the words, bitch, dick, and pussy enough to not be fazed but dude had an amazing flow on “Better Player.” I never really appreciated the C-Murder, Snoop Dogg, and Magic featured “Dying In My City” but these days I seem to have an appreciation for the track. “MG Theme” by Steady Mobb’N on the other hand was and still is a fat shit cake.
The Lil Soldiers put it down like hell on the sentimental“Close 2 You” even though they were all of seven years old. The Mr. Serv-On and full Blooded featured “Luv 4 Me” seems to make a lot more sense to me these days. When this compilation first came out I used to really be off Mystikal’s“That’s The Nigga,” now I’m a little turned off by the whole fruit loop lyrics and shit of that sort. Back when this CD first came out I thought that my prayers had been answered when I saw that B-Legit and C-Murder hooked up on “BiggaThan…,” unfortunately I was rather disappointed. But everything was made okwhen Mo B. Dick kicked some fly ass R& B shit on the smooth as ass “Tell Me when.”
I must say that I was rather unimpressed when this compilation first came out. It seemed like nobody on it really gave a fuck about making good songs. I remember before I got on my bike that somebody told me that it was garbage. Anticipating something all day in middle school is a bitch and no matter what somebody else says I was still going to go spend my fifteen dollars on it bullshit or not. Unluckily for me I got a nice case green case full of bullshit. I guess I really can’t complain too much, at east the case and artwork look good in my collection!
