A few weeks ago my good friend and business associate Sean Stafford asked me if I wanted a Kentucky flag. Of course with most things political things getting our flags proved to be a little more tedious than we anticipated with certain political offices giving us the run around while other just gave us a [...]

Project Pat – Real Recognize Real (2-24-2009)

For the past decade Project Pat has been a steady figure in the rap game thanks to his family affiliation with Three 6 Mafia. His debut effort Ghetty Green proved to be one of 1999’s highlights yet it was his 2001 effort Mista Don’t Play: Everythangs Workin that solidified him as a household name. After serving nearly four years in the Feds Pat came home to a nearly defunct fan base in 2005 and has used each successive year to build his notoriety back up. With his latest effort Real Recognize Real Pat is keen to build on the steam he amassed with 2007’s Walkin Bank Roll.

Aside from the garbage ass hook Pat does a decent job of sticking to his guns on the album’s opening effort “Slick Hater.” DJ Paul and Juicy J work with their typical production elements but sprinkle is some horror movie sound effects on the aforementioned track. In a surprising move Pat invites Gucci Mane to spit alongside him on the all too stupid sounding “Bang
Smack.”

Project Pat turns in his routine pimpin track with the convincing “I Be Fresh” where he laces the spring’s official mack track. On the grimy “Aint Scared Of Ya” Project Pat takes some time to revert back to his old, pre-prison, and all around more hood persona. “Gold Teeth” turns out to be another decent track suffering from a retarded ass hook by Project Pat. Again, “Dats The Way You Do It” suffers from a juvenile and obviously un-thought out hook courtesy of the HCP.

DJ Paul, Juicy J, and Project Pat combine their creative efforts to take a moment from the past on the classic HCP inspired “Choppa To Ya Dome.” The three longest standing members of the Memphis based label show up together on the antagonizing warning shot, “My Money.” On the albums closing efforts Pat speaks about the different side effects of weed. Sex is obviously the topic on “Horny” and on the economically influenced “Stayin High” Pat discusses some of the effects that high gas process have had on his favorite past time.

Unfortunately for Project Pat his best musical days are far behind him, almost an entire decade behind him as a matter of fact. With his latest effort, Real Recognize Real, Project Pat fails to connect with his core audience mainly because of forced and ill-planned material. Some of the production proves to be substantial but tired and ineffective subjects make this a less desirable listen. Next time around if Pat can put just a little more time into crafting his work he might just find himself back in the good graces of his longtime fans.
