Slim Thug – Boss Of All Bosses (3-24-2009)
Posted on Mar 21 in Reviewsby adminPrint

Slim Thug first became a part of the mainstream rap culture with his appearance on 2003’s epic H-town anthem “Still Tippin.” Even though the song didn’t build up enough firepower to blow up until early 2005 Thugga still managed to secure a major label deal for his debut effort Already Platinum. Later that summer the album dropped to an obviously non-platinum outcome but through it all Slim Thug has none-the-less cemented his name as one of the still standing spokesmen of Houston, TX. His latest effort Boss Of All Bosses should prove to be a testament of his staying power in the tough cutthroat rap industry.
Slim Thug opens up his second solo offering with the powerful Mr. Lee produced title track “Boss Of All Bosses.” The originally Dr. Dre produced version of “I’m Back” was sequentially snatched from the final pressing of the album and replaced by the equally appeasing Mr. Lee engineered version. Slim Thug and Devin The Dude display a chemistry that can only be found somewhere deep in the heart of Texas on the aforementioned jewel. Mannie Fresh proves that he’s getting more and more ready for that Hot Boys reunion effort with a timeless production effort on the laid back “Show Me Love.”
Thugga takes a page out of The Dream’s book as he gets a little R&Bish on the spacey Jim Jonsin produced “Smile.” Paul Wall and Thugga put every aspect of Houston’s slab culture on blast over a springtime ready beat courtesy of Mr. Lee on “Top Drop.” The track comes at the most opportunistic time as everybody from coast to coast will be sittin their shit back on rims over the next couple of weeks.
Thugga enlists the assistance of J-Dawg and Z-Ro on the loyalty driven anthem “Associates.” Besides the fact that Scarface’s verse on “Hard” is recycled the track turns out to be one of the biggest sleeper efforts on the album. It seems as though the entire metropolitan population shows up on “Welcome 2 Houston” as Slim Thug gets help from Chamillionaire, Paul Wall, Mike Jones, Pimp C (RIP), Bun B, Lil Keke, Z-Ro, Trae, Rob G, Lil O, Big Pokey, Mike D, and Young Redd on the album’s closing number. The only question left is “where’s Lil Flip?”
Boss Of All Bosses turns out to be a pretty pleasant trunk pleaser from start to finish. Of course if you’re not already a fan of the slowed down syrupy Texas sound then this album definitely won’t do much of anything to change your mind. Fans who have been riding with Slim Thug since his Swishahouse mixtape days will definitely find solace in his latest project thanks to Texas styled beats, bars, and hooks.
