Gucci Mane – Muder Was The Case (5-12-2009)

Not many artist get the luxury of going to prison for an entire calendar and come home to the height of their career. ATL’s Gucci Mane is not one of those artist! Since returning to the streets in early April Gucci Mane has seemingly assumed Lil Wayne’s position as the hottest rapper in the streets. He’s so hot that even his old record label just can’t stop dropping old throwaway tracks as new albums. Murder Was The Case serves as Gucci’s second unofficial Big Cat Records release in the past three years.
Gucci’s latest unofficial album starts out on a more than sour note as he spits a bunch of throw-a-way rhymes on “Runnin Back (Getting Fat).” The Speedy produced “Hot!” sounds like it started out in the direction of hit material but by the time it hit the final chopping block Gucci made a good decision to keep it off of any of his official releases. The Zaytoven produced “Block Party” would have been a semi-great addition had it not been for its age on the mixtape circuit.
I must admit that the Zaytoven produced “Stoopid” doesn’t sound quite as stupid as I once thought. The one bright spot on this album is the finding of Mel-Man as he handles the production behind the aged Young Jeezy diss “Murder For Fun.” I’m forced to believe that the artist listed as B.A. on “Trap Money (Remix)” is actually OJ Da Juiceman due to his rampant use of words and terms such as rubber bands, in the kitchen, babies, and aye! “Neva Had Shit” might be the first time that Gucci Mane has ever taken time to reflect on his obviously tough upbringing.
The Tra Beats produced “Yella Diamonds turns out to be one of those tracks where you can barely understand what Gucci is talking about; maybe he ate a bunch of pills before hitting the studio that day. The album hits a high point as Gucci and Zaytoven prove to be a dream team like combination on the made for murder “Cuttin Off Fingaz.” While most will probably be sick of Guccimania by the final two joints his regular fans will most likely buy into both “Gangs” and the DJ Speedy produced “Shittin Onum.”
Though Murder Was The Case does have its reasonable points any reasonable fan of Gucci Mane would be hard pressed to buy into this obviously dated material. After the release of these throwaway tracks it would seem that Big Cat Records is not as interested in the money they can make off of Gucci Mane’s street credibility but more for how bad they can fuck his good name up. Fans should definitely take Gucci Mane’s advice and not support this album!
